Bernd Pulverer, Head of Scientific Publications at EMBO
Abstract
Publishing in selected journals and citation metrics are increasingly used as surrogates for quality in research assessment. This risks to slow down scientific progress. EMBO has addressed the concerns about scientific publishing through its 'transparent process', which ensures fast, fair and informed editorial decisions with full accountability. EMBO is implementing mechanisms that will allow every paper that reports high quality research to be published with minimal delay. EMBO's Source Data project is recasting the paper as a rich online resource that allows researchers to discover, reproduce and share research data effectively. I will discuss these policies and mechanisms and will elaborate in particular how to author a compelling paper and how to engage in constructive peer review.
